International Women’s Day 2025: Accelerating Action for Equality

As we approach International Women’s Day on 8th March, Amina – the Muslim Women’s Resource Centre takes a moment to reflect on the urgent need to accelerate action towards gender equality. This year’s theme Accelerate Action deeply resonates with the work we do at Amina MWRC. Based in Scotland, we stand at the forefront of empowering Muslim, Black, and Minority Ethnic (BME) women across the country.
International Women’s Day Activities & Engagements
Earlier this week, our CEO Mariam Ahmed featured on BBC Scotland to speak about Extended Family Abuse and the Fawziyah Javed case. Read about the appearance here and watch the video clip on Instagram.
Later this month, we will be hosting Empowerment, Connection & Control, our empowering jewellery-making session for International Women’s Day! Let’s come together to create, connect, and empower one another, while discussing influential women and changes needed to progress in women’s equality.
Our Mission and Impact
At Amina MWRC, our mission is rooted in providing essential services that uplift and support Muslim & BME women in Scotland. Here is a glimpse into our four key projects:
- Helpline & Befriending: Our Helpline operates from Monday to Friday, offering a confidential space for women to seek support on issues ranging from mental health to domestic abuse. Our culturally sensitive approach ensures that every woman feels heard and understood. The Befriending service extends this support with weekly calls, providing vital companionship and encouragement, and our Sahara Scotland service helps women suffering from domestic abuse.
- Employability, Financial Inclusion & Adult Learning: Empowering women economically is central to our ethos. Through workshops and personalised support, our Employability, Financial Inclusion & Adult Learning team assists women in securing jobs, navigating financial matters, and enhancing their skills through free and accredited adult learning programmes including ICT and ESOL.
- VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls): Ending violence within our communities is a collective effort. Our VAWG project works hard to deliver educational events, specialised training, research and awareness campaigns to combat issues including extended family domestic abuse and inter-generational trauma. Our work is uniquely tailored to the cultural contexts of our clients.
- Creative Well-Being: Recognising the importance of holistic well-being, our Creative Well-Being initiative provides a safe space for women in Glasgow and Dundee. From health and arts workshops to skill-sharing and outdoor activities, this programme fosters personal growth and community connection.
