Public Statement: Urgent Action for Women’s Safety in Glasgow
Update: Exciting news – Bailie Soryia Siddique and Glasgow Labour Group’s motion on Women’s Safety has been passed as part of a composite agreement. We are proud to have supported this motion publicly, and will continue to do so. We welcome the Glasgow Women’s Safety Action Plan and look forward to seeing key partners make a change.
Original Statement:
We support the Motion by Bailie Soryia Siddique which recognises the urgent need for women’s safety in Glasgow. All women are entitled to safety; we welcome a proposal for a Glasgow Women’s Safety Action Plan which brings together key partners to implement practical safety improvements for women.
From March 2024 to March 2025, our national Helpline took over 1600 calls from Muslim & BME women experiencing domestic abuse. We have seen a 385% increase in the number of cases of domestic abuse from our callers. The women we support are from marginalised communities and often face multiple barriers to support.
The voices and experiences of Muslim & BME women must be included in policy-making, particularly in the development of the Glasgow Women’s Safety Action Plan. We must take immediate action to help bring an end to violence against women and girls.
