Public Statement: Islamophobic & Racist Attacks

5th August, 2024

Amina MWRC is alarmed and worried by the ongoing Racist and Islamophobic incidents across the UK. Over the past week, we have witnessed disturbing scenes from the Islamophobic marches and riots. The resulting violence, destruction, and instability are a troubling reflection of the current political climate, and harmful narratives promoted by certain political figures.

This ongoing rhetoric and the spread of false information are causing a detrimental impact on all people of colour. We have seen BME children being chased and harassed by adults, acid attacks on visibly Muslim women from passing cars, and targeted attacks on places of worship.

Everyone deserves to live without fear of safety, regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

We call on our politicians to acknowledge the clear evidence and recognise these incidents for what they are: hate crimes. Immediate action is required to address and curb this hate before it escalates further.

To our BME sisters and brothers, please stay vigilant in public spaces. Report all hate crimes and contact the police when necessary.

Amina MWRC supports BME people as a third-party hate crime reporting centre. To report a hate crime in Scotland, please call 0808 801 0301 or email helpline@mwrc.org.uk.

Together, we stand against hate for a safe and inclusive society.
