Exposed: Campaign on Intimate Image Abuse

17th March 2025
Amina – the Muslim Women’s Resource Centre presents Exposed, our joint 2025 campaign on Intimate Image Abuse in Scotland, in partnership with Revenge Porn Helpline and Report Harmful Content.
Current legislation around Intimate Image Abuse does not adequately protect Muslim & BME women. For them, intimate images could include photos without their hijab, images indicating a romantic relationship outside of marriage, or photos of them wearing private home attire. While these categories do not fall under the legal framework for intimate images, many women in Scotland experience abuse through the misuse of such images.
Through Exposed, we aim to highlight the experiences of these women, who are often silenced on such issues, while sharing support that is available for such instances through our online resources. We also hope to campaign for legislation that is more reflective of the experiences of Muslim & BME women in Scotland.
Purpose of the Exposed Campaign
Our campaign has three key aims:
1. To Educate
Legislation around intimate image abuse does not adequately protect Muslim & BME women. Sharing women’s private images, whether showing their bodies or even their hair for Hijab-wearing women, can have a detrimental impact on their lives. Exposed educates by raising awareness of these women’s specific needs. To learn more about Intimate Image Abuse and the impact this has on Muslim & BME women, watch our short YouTube Film or access the interactive website guide here.
2. To Help
Our Exposed website page highlights pathways for help available to victims. Our website resource also provides a roadmap to support, regardless of whether images fall under the legislative definition of intimate.
3. To Protect
The current legal framework identifies intimate images as nude, partially nude or sexual. For BME women, photos implying a relationship, showing them in private home attire, or without the Hijab could also be considered intimate. We aim to protect women by urging policy-makers to broaden the definition of intimate image abuse. Help us to protect Muslim & BME women in Scotland from intimate image abuse by sharing our resources widely.
