On Friday 19th January, for the first time showing together, 35 individual squares filled with intricate embroidered tapestry graced the space at the V&A Dundee. This evening event celebrated the launch of an exhibition showcasing The Dundee Tapestry, a project led by Andrew Crummy, the main artist and pioneer alongside John Fyffe and Dr Frances Stevenson (Senior Lecturer from Duncan and Jordanstone -Dundee University).

Amina’s Creative Well-Being group were invited to take part in the official opening of the Dundee tapestry exhibition before being open for public view.

The project took 3 years to curate from the moment planning commenced to the completion of the tapestries. A momentous achievement.

The evening event celebrated and showcased all the hard work and dedication by all the volunteers and groups that went into completing the tapestries. Each tapestry tells a piece of Dundee’s history from 1850’s to present time, delving into a range of topics including nature, art, technology, women, trade, to name a few. Amina’s panel celebrates The Nine Wells.

There were more than 200 people in attendance, including the 140 volunteer stitchers, Dundee’s Lord Provost, the senior team from The Dundee Tapestry, Shona Robison – Deputy First Minister of Scotland and of course some of the wonderful Amina MWRC team – Amina’s CEO Miriam Ahmed, Khadija Hussein, Asmau Sanusi, Maqsoodan Arshid, and Arati Ahmed.

There are ‘meet the stitchers’ sessions at V&A Dundee on Saturday 23rd March and Saturday 20th April. Find out more here.
