The You Can Change This campaign is Amina MWRC’s contribution to ending violence against women and girls. Currently, many women and girls experience forms of gender-based violence such as sexual assault, coercive control, so-called ‘honour’ based violence, forced marriage and FGM. Islam is against all forms of harm, and so we want to work with Muslim communities to challenge this abuse of human rights. You can watch our Imams for Change film here to find out more.
We’d like you to become a changemaker.
This involves a kind of volunteering called ‘microvolunteering’ which does not require a big commitment. Microvolunteering with Amina can be doing something like sharing a social media post or video, or talking about the You Can Change This campaign to family and friends which will raise awareness of our campaign. We would love you to spread the word about Amina but also about support organisations which can help those affected by gender-based violence, such as Shakti Women’s Aid, local Women’s Aid charities, local Rape Crisis organisations and so on.
It’s a convenient and easy way to get involved as it can be done anytime, anywhere. You can opt for small actions, like signing a petition, that take as little as a minute. The idea behind micro volunteering is that many people doing small actions can create a big impact.
If you’re busy this could be perfect. Or if conventional volunteering is difficult due to caring responsibilities or your own disability, you might find it suits, as you can do it somewhere that works for you. From the comfort of your own home, at work, on holiday, you can make a difference.
Some micro-actions, like filling in a survey or engaging your friends in discussion, you can do when you are out and about. There are a huge range of micro-actions including letter writing, photo-tagging, surveys, and for other organisations you can get involved with, things like mini-beach cleans.
The causes you can support are wide ranging – the environment, health, communities, science, fighting poverty. With Amina MWRC, you can support our ‘I speak for myself’ and ‘You Can Change This’ campaigns to ensure women from Muslim and Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds can achieve their goals and live safe, happy lives. Many of the actions are one-off – so you only have to do something when you have the time.
There’s no requirement to undergo a training process. We have found that although actions don’t take a lot of time, they give people a sense of fulfillment in giving back to the community.
If you’ve done anything at all to support our ‘You Can Change This’ campaign, we’d love to hear from you.
Have you shared a blog post with friends? Asked your colleagues to donate to us? Watched a video of ours with a relative? Please fill in our survey to tell us what you did, so we can share this news in our annual report, with our funder, and in our communities.

- Attend one of our events and invite your friends along too.
