Public Statement: VAWG in Sudan

15th November 2024

Trigger Warning: SA, Rape, Suicide, Murder

In the last 20 months, over 61,000 people have died in Khartoum, Sudan, of which more than 26,000 were violently killed. The RSF is deliberately poisoning food and carrying out the mass rape and murder of women and girls. There are reports of girls as young as ten being raped and impregnated, and women are giving birth without sterilised equipment.

As with other conflicts, sexual violence is being used as a tool to control and violate women and girls. Sudan is a Muslim country, where suicide is often considered forbidden. However, women are resorting to suicide to save themselves from sexual violation, a truly devastating measure to escape the horrific situation.

Over 5.8 million women and girls have been displaced, leaving them more vulnerable than ever amidst the famines and shortages. Cholera and other preventable diseases are spreading, with limited access to healthcare and clean water.

We must speak up against this gender-based violence and clear exploitation of human rights. We must stand with our sisters in Sudan against the malicious government forces to advocate for the rights of women globally.

Violence must be ended against all women and girls – we must all do our part in raising awareness of the situation, and advocating towards an end. All women deserve the right to safety.
